Job description

We’re looking for experienced Disability Support Workers to provide practical, respectful support to participants living in Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes throughout Newcastle.

There are 30+ hours per week available, with opportunities across a number of SIL homes.

This role is particularly suited to support workers who are confident with personal care, manual handling and hoisting, medication support and mealtime management. Some participants may also display challenging behaviours, so previous experience supporting people with complex behaviours or mental health needs will be valuable.

The focus is on helping each participant live as independently as possible while providing safe, person-centred support based on their individual needs, preferences and goals.

Tasks and responsibilities

Your day-to-day work may include:

  • Personal care: Supporting participants with hygiene, showering, toileting, dressing and other aspects of daily life at home while maintaining their dignity and independence.

  • Manual handling: Supporting participants who require physical assistance, including the safe use of hoists and other mobility or transfer equipment.

  • Medication support: Assisting participants with medication in line with their individual support plans and relevant procedures.

  • Mealtime management: Supporting safe meal preparation, eating and drinking according to participants’ individual needs and plans.

  • Community access: Supporting participants to get out into the community, attend appointments, socialise and take part in activities they choose. Community support should always be guided by what the participant wants to do.

  • Providing transport where required.

  • Following individual support plans and documenting relevant information.

  • Supporting participants who may display challenging behaviours in a calm, respectful and consistent way.

  • Where applicable, supporting participants with epilepsy in line with their individual management plans.
