Job description

Dream Maker is building a new team of experienced Disability Support Workers to support a woman in Marsden Park with complex behavioural support needs.

We are looking for workers who are compassionate but confident. This participant needs people around her who can build genuine rapport without becoming overly permissive, maintain clear boundaries and remain consistent with the rest of the team.

The participant has a history of substance use, including methamphetamine use, as well as complex and challenging behaviours. At times, workers may experience threatening or confronting communication, although she is not currently known for physical aggression.

She can challenge authority and test whether different workers will give her different answers. For that reason, consistency and teamwork are essential. This is not a role where workers can operate independently of the agreed team approach. Everyone needs to communicate, follow the support plan and back each other.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Providing one-to-one direct support as part of a two-worker support model

  • Building a safe and respectful working relationship with the participant

  • Following behaviour support strategies and agreed boundaries consistently

  • Responding calmly to challenging communication and changing situations

  • Supporting daily routines and activities at home

  • Supporting community access and social participation based on what the participant wants to do

  • Supporting the participant's independence and personal choices wherever possible

  • Providing personal care where required, including hygiene, showering, toileting and other daily living needs

  • Supporting manual handling where required, including the safe use of equipment such as hoists

  • Supporting someone who may experience mental health concerns, substance use and challenging behaviours

  • Completing shift notes, incident documentation and handovers accurately

  • Communicating openly with the Key Worker and other team members

  • Maintaining consistency when boundaries or agreed support approaches are challenged

  • Working as one team rather than creating cliques or different sets of rules between workers
